In 1989 The Severn Valley Railway made a huge investment in constructing a purpose built boiler repair shop. Named in memory of George Knight, he was the Deputy Chief Boiler Inspector of British Railways (London Midland Region). Twenty years after the building of the boilershop, new generations of boilersmiths are still carrying out the very techniques George passed down to the early Severn Valley boilersmiths.
In 2009 the Boilershop Contract Engineering repair section was re-launched. 2011 has seen the Severn Valley Railway complete its first new build boiler. SVR1 was built for Talyllyn Railway No2 ‘Dolgoch’, and is a traditional riveted boiler complete with a copper firebox. This has been built to modern specifications and is CE marked.
