GWR 7802 Bradley Manor

Erlestoke Manor Fund owned locomotive was withdrawn from Severn Valley Railway service in January 2011, pending a full 10 yearly overhaul. Since this happened the Erlestoke Manor fund have been active in ensuring that 7802 is not idle for too long. An agreement has been made with Tyseley Locomotive Works to overhaul the chassis of the loco whilst the group undertake some stripping of the boiler to enable the Severn Valley Railway to undertake a boiler assessment to establish the level of work required. 7802 Bradley Manor first entered traffic on the Severn Valley Railway in 1994, and in her operational period has covered over 111,160 miles, in only 16 years operation. The boiler was lifted on Friday 14th October 2011, and this view shows the frames in Bridgnorth yard on Wednesday 27th October.

BR Ivatt Class 2MT 46443

The Severn Valley Railway’s longest serving resident was withdrawn from active service on the 5th October 2011. She had been running on a boiler extension so she could operate on our Enthusiasts event, however the general condition of the locomotive, along with a fault in the smokebox, dictated her being stopped from the active SVR fleet.
The locomotive entered traffic in December 2001, having gained her boiler certificate on 18th July of that year, so she completed a successful 10 year boiler cycle. In her operation on the Severn Valley Railway she has covered 145,997 miles, second only to 48773 which has recorded 151,805 miles. The loco will now be stored awaiting a heavy overhaul.

Beamish Museum's recently acquired locomotive arrived in Bridgnorth on the afternoon of Thursday 19th May 2011. This was the first time the locomotive has been on UK rails since 1965, 46 years ago! The locomotive was the Duke of Sutherland's private locomotive, and used to work on the Highland Railway, being based inn its own shed at Dunrobin Castle. The loco has a saloon which used to accompany it on its travels, the Beamish Blog provides further views and information on this saloon.

A start on assessing this interesting and unique little locomotive is expected to start shortly.

Talyllyn Railway No2 'Dolgoch'

14th May 1951 saw the inaugural train on the worlds first preserved railway. This was the Talyllyn Railway, which this year celebrates 60 years as a preserved railway. No2 Dolgoch was the loco which worked the first train, and every train in 1951 as there was no other locomotive available to operate the service!
The Severn Valley Railway Contract Engineering Boilershop, undertook the challenge in last May to build a new riveted boiler for No2, to enable her to attend this special occasion. We are happy and pleased to say that we made the deadline with the boiler, and No2 was able to commemorate the occasion by sixty years later pulling out of Wharf Station with the same formation as she did sixty years previously. These pictures were taken on Saturday (14th), and show Dolgoch complete with her number SVR1 boiler fitted.

Talyllyn Railway No2 Dolgoch

The boiler for Talyllyn Railway No2 Dolgoch was dispatched to the Talyllyn at Tywyn on Thursday 24th March 2011. This is the first new boiler to be completed by the Severn Valley Railway, and the first boiler completed in the town for nearly two hundred years! A number of photos will be uploaded as time permits to show the story of the construction of the boiler. The boilers identity is SVR1, and this will be displayed on a constructors plate on the firebox doorplate.

These two views show the barrel and firebox wrapper assembly undergoing drilling on the boilershop radial drill.

WR Pannier Tank 1501

Now 813 has vacated the LT jack area, 1501 has moved into place and has now had all the driving wheels, springs and axleboxes removed. These two photographs show the driving wheels and main frames after they have been thoroughly cleaned with the steam cleaner. Work is now going to focus on the wear on the axleboxes and tyres. It is hoped that this may be a fairly quick job as the locomotive was re-tyred towards the end of her previous spell in traffic. The main benefit of the strip down is that it enables a thorough clean down and repaint of the main frames, all the coupling rods and connecting rods will also be re-metalled.
